Re: Phishing -- are you experienced?

Craig Nelson

Our conservation district in Washington State has seen quite a few more pop up recently.  The ones that are the scariest are the ones that say they are from a known person.  We even had one last week where 'employee A' received an e-mail that appeared to come from 'employee B' until the receiving employee looked at the e-mail address because the content of the message didn't quite make sense.  The name in the header matched the name of one of our employees, but the e-mail address was absolutely different, like not even close to our convention type of different.

I'm particularly concerned too with the web-site generated e-mails from platforms like Dropbox when you share a file or folder there.  We have received a couple of those from partners with a link to open the file they shared with us.  Those are by far the scariest to me because the most recent round looked real enough and were from partners we actively engage with, so I'm sad to say it got me and one other employee in our office before we caught onto the fact that it was a phishing attack.

Now we are all hyper vigilant until unfortunately we aren't some time in the future and we start all over again...sigh.

Phishing -- are you experienced?

Pacific NCDEA

My conservation district had a bad experience with phishing recently.  That caused me to bring up this topic when I visited with the Idaho District Employees Association board last week.  I was surprised -- and alarmed! -- to hear several people describe their experiences with attempts to phish information from them.

Have districts in your state been subjected to phishing attempts?  How severe is the problem?  Your responses may help us develop training materials to help protect our sister districts from this kind of cyber threat!

( What is phishing?  See this government article: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-avoid-phishing-scams )

Tim,

NRCS made a big to do about having Cooperative Working Agreements with CDs here in Washington about 5 or 6 years ago.  Here's the closest to final I have in an electronic version.  We are in the same building as NRCS but have a separate lease agreement and do not share office space.  Feel free to drop me a line if you have questions.

Let me see what we have here. Although we are still all in the same building as an ag service center, I am the only staffer who shares office space.  I am required to have a LincPass, and we have done a variety of agreements in the past (including having something in the lease) but let me check.....

So far we are committing to our District Planners (partially funded through NRCS Cooperative Agreements) to be at their office 2 days a week; as well as some sort of "get together" monthly at our new building where we will have a nice sized conference room for trainings, learning lunches, etc., covering any range of topics from technical, human resources, computer usage, customer service, whatever really just to have a reason to continue face-to-face interaction on a regular basis...open to topic ideas...did I mention our new building is directly next door to a Bavarian Bakery?  Oh....yeah that.....

Non Co-Located District Offices

Tim Riley

For anyone that is in a District office that is not co-located with USDA; do you have a written agreement with your local and/or state USDA-NRCS to coordinate your operations and/or solidify a commitment to your local Conservation Partnership?

My District office will be separating from USDA for the first time in its existence this summer, and we are currently working on an agreement to ensure our partnership stays strong and is in writing for future representatives of both the District and USDA-NRCS to have a mode of operations committed to our Partnership.  Just curious, if anyone else has such agreements; what all those agreements may encompass?

Thank you,

Re: Question of the week: state-level sub-groups for the NCDEA Network?

Jay Udelhoven

I think this is one of the questions I'd like to discuss at CONNECT in a few weeks.

"What forum is best for Oregon SWCD DMs to keep in touch with one another on a consistent/as-needed basis?"

If the majority think this forum will work, I'm all in. If not, then we might need something else. What that is, I do not  know.

Re: Question of the week: state-level sub-groups for the NCDEA Network?

Tim Riley

If attending UW will help me to remember the definition of words like "ambivalent" without having to look ask Google, then I buy in to your theory that UW is the better school.  This hypothesis is flawed however, because WSU may in fact offer that same level of vocabulary education....darn now I have to ask Google the definition of "hypothesis" to make sure I'm using it correctly....what a vicious mental conundrum you have caused Craig....ugh here we go again "OK google, what's the definition of conundrum?"........

Re: Question of the week: state-level sub-groups for the NCDEA Network?

Tim Riley

I feel if we are going to give our audience what they want, then yes we should "if so requested".

Perhaps in doing so they can have the option of making the group and/or individual topics public or private?  Not sure what capabilities this software has...
